Winfrith Newburgh is a pretty village with old thatched cottages, an
imposing church, a village shop cum Post office and a Pub.
There are many places to walk . There is a village trail around Winfrith
and many footpaths leading to the surrounding villages.
Winfrith is within a few miles of the Bovington Tank Museum, Monkey
World (which is a rescue centre ). The village of Moreton with it's beautiful church windows designed by WHISTLER and the grave of LAWRENCE OF ARABIA are not far away.
At Lulworth there is a Castle, the Cove and Durdle Door. From
Lulworth there are coastal paths along the Dorset Heritage Coast.
A little further afield is Abbotsbury with its famous swannery. Then
there is THOMAS HARDY'S COTTAGE at Upper Bockhampton, the sandy beaches of Weymouth and Swanage and not forgetting Cerne Abbas with its 150 foot GIANT cut into the hill-side.
For shopping WAREHAM, is seven miles away with its small
independent shops and a market on Thursday mornings . This ancient walled town is well worth a visit as is DORCHESTER , with its market on Wednesday mornings and only 12 miles from the cottage.
There are many other very interesting places further afield in Dorset
along with plenty of traditional English Country Pubs, many providing both good food and ale. |
